Body Science Project

This morning we made Valentine's! None of the Batman or Strawberry Shortcake store bought Valentines for us. We cut out hearts, used stickers, glitter, and made them the old school way. I did however print and cut out these cutie Valentine girls from The Black Apple to make my Valentines. I then traced Luke, Isabel and Sylvia on butcher paper and cut them out.  Actually Isabel cut hers out all by herself (so much for "not being that good at cutting.")  I then explained that over the next few weeks we are going to be doing a science project about our bodies.  As an example, after we learn about the heart they will color and cut out a heart and glue it to their paper bodies that are up on the wall.

After lunch we played outside for a long time.  It is great weather here now!  Luke then did his math.  He is on a new lesson: subtracting using regrouping.

Liquid Density

My friend, Kollen, teaches preschool and always has great ideas that I like to steal! She came over yesterday for a visit and inspired me to try a liquid density science experiment. Here is the experiment in detail with even more liquid density experiments to do (if you want to go in depth for older children) and fun facts, etc. What we basically did was fill three clear glasses. One with water, one with cooking oil, and one with corn syrup. Next I had the kids drop in various objects (paper clip, cheerios, pennies, etc) having them first make predictions on whether it would sink or float. I had made a simple chart for Luke to keep a log. Next I put blue food coloring in the water and red in the corn syrup. We then poured all three liquids in an old jam jar to see what would happen. Afterward they had fun taking turns shaking it.

Not in the Mood

This morning I kept procrastinating starting school while the kids played.  Finally I said, "Here's the deal.  I am not in the mood for school today because everything in the schoolroom" (and in the whole house for that matter) "is very disorganized at the moment.  If you guys do your math worksheets, write in your journals and help me organize then I'll read you The Dragons of Blueland tonight and we can be done." Right now I am trying to find a place for everything.  Is it my imagination or is it getting messier and messier in here the harder I clean?  AHHHHH!   This afternoon their friends Aden and Morgan will come over to play.
